Commitment to Equity

We believe everyone has the potential to thrive when offered dignity, caring and compassion.

Thrive DC embraces its commitment to equity on two levels: the individual and systemic.

The Individual

We view our organization not as a charity helping the less fortunate, but as a center where the community can help its members in crisis. While we maintain appropriate boundaries to protect the safety of our staff, volunteers, and clients, we also foster a space where meaningful relationships are built -- regardless of background, age, race, or status.

Hard luck and unfortunate events can happen to anyone; it’s important to Thrive DC that we emphasize what we share and have in common instead of the things that divide us.

The Systemic

We recognize that “people of color (POC), and African Americans in particular, are disproportionately affected by the drivers of homelessness in the District.”

These great inequalities have consequences. We recognize the existence and impact of structural racism, socioeconomic disparities, educational, and health inequities that have disproportionately affected the most vulnerable communities.

These must be dismantled if we want our institutions to represent just, equitable, diverse, and inclusive (JEDI) systems where all members are valued, heard, respected, and empowered to pursue their full potential.

Our Approach

1. We strive for representation across our workforce and membership that reflects diversity in race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, ability, religion, and more.

2. We privilege the perspectives gained from the lived experiences of our diverse community, and use them to strengthen our work and achieve our mission.

3. We provide individuals in crisis with the support they need to counteract a broken system where they are at a disadvantage.

4. We push for radical change to the systems that privilege some communities at the expense of others.

5. We hold as our guide a vision of our city where everyone has the potential to thrive when offered dignity, caring and compassion.
