Meet Thrive DC’s New Evening Program Coordinator!

For a few months now, Thrive DC has had a new Evening Program Coordinator in charge of our dinner program for women. So we thought it was about time we introduced her! Meet Ms. Johnson and find out why we love her, why our clients love her, and why we hope she stays with us for a good long time.

Oneaqua JohnsonWhat made you interested in helping homeless women specifically?

I love helping people achieve self sufficiency.  Independence builds character, and increases self esteem which is important. I was raised by a single mother so motivating and empowering women is something I feel is necessary. There are not enough positive environments that cater to woman so for me Thrive DC is a blessing.

How did you hear about Thrive DC?

I was introduced to Thrive DC through a previous employer who utilized the resources provided. When I worked with the TANF population, I was able to produce many success stories as result of services Thrive DC had provided.

What makes Thrive DC different than other homeless programs?

The staff is passionate, and goes above expectations to meet the needs of those we serve.

What is an awesome moment you’ve had at Thrive DC?

Being acknowledged by the ladies who participate in the program for my efforts to motivate, encourage, and empower them daily.

What do you see as the biggest need among the women you work with?

The biggest need is housing. A lot of women have become homeless due to circumstance and due to the massive inflation in housing cost many are unable to live independently. It is disheartening to see elderly woman sleeping outside because DC doesn’t view housing the homeless as a major priority.

What are you passionate about?

Changing lives, good food, music, family, and living comfortably.

What’s your favorite breakfast food?

Sausage is my favorite breakfast food, but outside of a good steak and loaded baked potato, breakfast is my favorite meal.

What’s a cool and interesting fact about yourself?

I love to sing, music is my therapy, and provides a daily escape to gather my thoughts.
