Thrive DC is really excited to announce our newest member, Kelly Close! She is taking over for Greg Rockwell, who is moving on to become our Community Relations Manager. We had the chance to sit down with Kelly for a few minutes and ask the hard hitting questions:
What made you start volunteering at Thrive DC?
I first learned about Thrive DC from a flyer in Coffy Cafe on 14th St NW. I started volunteering on Fridays and quickly found a community.
What is an awesome moment you’ve had at Thrive DC?
An awesome moment at Thrive? Every Friday when I get to see all of the familiar faces that come to our Fresh Food Fridays. We talk about food and nutrition and crack jokes in English and Spanish.
How will your experience as a volunteer help now that you organize volunteers?
Volunteering at Thrive made me feel comfortable with our clients and our programs. I hope my experience as a volunteer will help me connect our volunteers in a deeper, more meaningful way with the people we serve.
I can relate to the motivation to come into Thrive and then to keep coming back. I hope to help everyone have the great experience I had, and work with our community to create an even more productive volunteer program.
What are you passionate about?
I’m passionate about my garden, supporting vulnerable communities, improving my Spanish language skills, and a more just food system.
What’s your favorite breakfast food?
My favorite breakfast food is an egg and cheese sandwich.
What’s a cool and interesting fact about yourself?
I am neither cool, nor interesting, but I am applying for my Irish citizenship through my paternal grandmother. Is that interesting enough?
