By Kiera Daniell

My name is Kiera Daniell and I am sixteen years old. Last year I joined Thrive DC in the Help the Homeless Walkathon on the National Mall. After walking with Thrive DC in the walkathon, I decided to do more. First I volunteered at Thrive DC in the kitchen.  I cleaned fish, handed out sandwiches, decorated cakes, and more. I had a lot of fun being a part of a group that is helping people in our community. I saw that we could all make a real difference by helping out this way. When I found out that there wasn’t going to be a big walkathon this year, I decided to do what I can to help Thrive DC keep programs like the morning meals going.

I came up with the idea of organizing my own walk which I have named Walk with Teens for the Homeless. My goal is to walk 30 miles in 3 days and to raise $5,000 – enough to serve more than 9,000 meals for people in need who come to Thrive DC. I’m asking my friends from school to join me by walking with me and/or helping me to find others who will register and support our team. We’ll need a total of 200 people to register for our team to reach this goal. Anyone can join us and you don’t have to do the walk to take part.  I’ve created a team page called Walk with Teens for the Homeless. All you have to do is follow the link and register for $20 if you’re 25 or younger and $30 if you’re over 25.  Thrive DC will receive 100% of your registration fee.

I decided to walk 30 miles because I think it shows people how serious we are about this campaign and how important it is to us. I think it will be hard but it will be a way to be part of a group that is doing something important and helpful to my community. I hope you’ll join me.
